Deeply ingrained in Swahili culture, kangas are ubiquitous on the Kenyan coast, worn as head coverings or shawls and around the waist. Characterized by a decorated border and Kiswahili phrase underlying a large central design, motifs take inspiration from the wide ranging cultural influences that have converged over a millennium along the Swahili coast, from the Persian boteh to Rajasthani bandhani to the Bantu cashew nut.

While the sayings were only added in the early 20th century, they are now are central to the textile. It's always fun to see who is wearing what, and why they chose it (or received it!). Sometimes the messages are political or commemorative, printed specifically for an event or organization, but often they're reflective of everyday life. Some of us can probably relate to "I won’t eat in the darkness for fear of my neighbor (I do what I want!)" and all of us can relate to, "There is no one like mom."

Adorable as a Vest or Shirt!

I love this shirt. It can be worn alone or as a vest in cooler weather. Beautiful shades of lavender and purple, and fun to have several different patterns in the same shirt!

    Lovely Purple Print

The contrasting floral designs are delicate and lively. The material softens considerably after a quick ironing. This blouse will be perfect for an August 1st return to school. Like all of Zuri, it can serve in many situations, casual and dressy.

    Pretty in Purple

Watamu is a very lovely and versatile top that’s perfect for summer. It’s a Kanga fabric top with coordinating patterns; the fabric is lightweight and not stiff. My sense is that it will soften over time and washes. The pattern is more subtle than a typical Zuri but the colors are pigmented and rich, softened by a white background. I love it!

    Purple Pleasing Pop of Color

Watamu is a beautiful purple sleeveless shirt. It can be worn as is for those hot, steamy, summer days or great as a layering piece for adding that pop of color over a neutral blouse. It’s a fabulous addition to my growing Zuri collection.

    surprised

well, I love the colors and the style! so of course I put in on and wore to dinner. Don't ya know, tomato sauce attacked by beautiful vest. Into the laundry - - and what came out was such a surprise. This cloth does not have the "substance" the "resilience" of all my dresses, [which I wear at least three times and week and wash often]. This vest must be ironed, and it winkles. It is cotton, so I understand, but the dresses don't wrinkle and don't need ironing to be in their original shape. What happened with this cotton cloth???

    Hi Charyl!

Thank you so much for taking the time to review Watamu! I'm so glad you love the colors and style, and sorry you found the fabric to be less wrinkle resistant than our dresses! It's a lighter, more breathable cotton and may have a bit less structure than our heavier cottons as a result.
Thank you again for taking the time to let us know, and we hope you'll still love it, even if it's a bit more high maintenance than your dresses!

    Much love,
    Charlotte from Zuri
