Designed by textile artist Tammi Williams, she told us: "The Mixtape design was for a mini collection I made called 'Analog'. I had seen wax prints featuring original iPods and cell phones. When those designs were released, they were reflecting on technology and the future. I thought it would be fun to go in the other direction and make a collection that reflected retro artifacts from my childhood. I thought about the mix tapes I used to make for myself when I was a moody teenager and added labels to some of the tapes in the design. There's even a pencil in there for when the tape inevitably gets jammed in the cassette player because you played it so much. IYKYK."

When we say 100% Made in Kenya, we really mean it! Made from cotton grown in western Kenya and designed, printed and stitched outside of Nairobi, it doesn't get more local than this! The ecosystem for rotary printed fabrics is complex and truly global. While it's rare to see a rotary printed textile produced in a closed-circuit, farm-to-shop supply chain, the fabrics we're producing are verifiably 100% made in Kenya. Not just traceable, but local. Not just identifiable, but ethical and accountable.
Our production impacts hundreds of smallholder farmers and their families each year. It impacts young Kenyan artists whose voices and work may now have a slightly bigger audience (and fan club:) ). It impacts the Kenyan textile manufacturing industry, which for years has been out-competed in the local market by imported fabrics. Finally, it impacts you, because you can know that your dress was made ethically, honestly, and with pride.

This fabulous print came on my Zuri radar as soon as the news broke of designer Tammi Williams and her pivot into print design! A child of the 70s and 80s, I had many a cassette tape in my day, and this light, airy sleeveless brings back memories! Another winner!

The retro Mixtape Zuri dress caught me by surprise. It brought back memories of recording music that I loved back-in-the-day. I love it so much that I ordered a second one that I dyed right orange!! So nice, I had to buy it twice!

First of all, Mixtape is utterly cool. There’s blanks on the cassettes so you can take a fabric marker and write in the names of your favorite bands and witty mixtape names. It’s white, so you can dye it whatever color you want.
I’m the Vice-President of the Board of Directors of Portland’s largest roller derby league, the Rose City Rollers. These photos were taken at the Hangar, the warehouse-like building where the league practices and holds bouts. The boombox wall has dwindled over the years, but it still holds magic. With my usual partner in crime, fellow Zurista Shannon Tocchini, we held our little photo shoot up in the mezzanine where the announcers and scorekeepers work. It’s only about 6 feet wide, but goes all the way down the length of the building.
Mixtape works for everything and always brings a smile. Now I can weed out anyone younger than mid-Millennial easily!
