These textiles are a part of our 100% Made in Kenya collection and were printed in Kenya on Kenyan grown cotton. The print was designed by Shadé Akanbi. Raised in the Bay Area, Shadé credits her Nigerian-American upbringing and extensive international travels as her main creative influences for designing. Now based in Brooklyn, Shadé is the Creative Director and Designer of Printed Pattern People and it's a true joy to be able to share her work with you!

Meet our production partner, SOKO Kenya! Based in Kikambala on the Kenyan coast, they are an ethical manufacturer that truly embraces a fair, kind and transparent work culture. In addition to paying above living wages, SOKO provides employees with paid leave and stipends for family emergencies, free pre-primary childcare for all employees with children from ages 2-4, daily mid-morning tea and midday lunch, and clear, outlined processes for job advancement. When we say 100% Made in Kenya, we really mean it! Made from cotton grown in western Kenya and designed, printed and stitched outside of Nairobi, it doesn't get more local than this! The ecosystem for rotary printed fabrics is complex and truly global. While it's rare to see a rotary printed textile produced in a closed-circuit, farm-to-shop supply chain, the fabrics we're producing are verifiably 100% made in Kenya. Not just traceable, but local. Not just identifiable, but ethical and accountable.
Our production impacts hundreds of smallholder farmers and their families each year. It impacts young Kenyan artists whose voices and work may now have a slightly bigger audience (and fan club:) ). It impacts the Kenyan textile manufacturing industry, which for years has been out-competed in the local market by imported fabrics. Finally, it impacts you, because you can know that your dress was made ethically, honestly, and with pride.

I wasn't sure the muted peachy colors were for me but WOW! The fabric is a little lighter. The dress flowed well all evening and of course I had to add my funky flair.

I love the lighter tips of peach colour in this scallop shell design; truly gives a glow to this print... also, it's an intriguing colour mix of peach, lavender and caramel, which convinced me that I had to get this Zuri... it's a lighter weight fabric perfect for warmer weather and it simply shimmers in the sun and is a lovely hue even indoors.

I had seen this print on a social media post months ago and have been [pretty patiently] waiting for this to drop. I receive so many compliments on it whenever I wear this. It's very comfortable and the color is just perfection.

I love the print and the colors but the execution was off. I understand that the print for this dress was rolled (?) onto the fabric rather than screened. On an extensive portion of the fabric used for the dress sent to me, white showed rather than color. Those errors occur. However, the cutters and the sewists could have salvaged the fabric by examining the fabric and rejecting it. A missed opportunity. I’m picky, even about my wearable art, so I had to return the dress. I would have asked Zuri to exchange it for another size S that did not have the mis-print, but then someone may have had to inspect a number of dresses which I am guessing are pre-packaged for shipping. I hail from an old family of Scottish silk-screen printers who emigrated to the US in the early 1900’s and a mother who was an expert sewist. I love the Zuri story and traditions and how my history intersects. I will try again when a print captures my interest.
